Annual learn.gold upgrade
by Roxanne Myles - Friday, 27 May 2016, 9:28 AM

This message is to inform you about the annual summer learn.gold upgrade process and accompanying changes to look out for. There is also information about workshops running over the summer to support you with these changes.

1. The Moodle (learn.gold) system software

The Moodle system software will be upgraded (from version 2.8+ to 3.1) over the Summer which will require a short period of outage, usually lasting a couple of hours in normal circumstances. The exact date and time for this is still to be confirmed.

So that we can plan the outage with minimum disruption to you, please can you let us know dates of any assignment submissions or any other significant activity on learn.gold scheduled between June and start of September?  We ask that you let us know these dates by Friday June 10 at the latest by emailing talic@gold.ac.uk.

You can preview the new version of Moodle here:  https://docs.moodle.org/31/en/New_features

2. New Course areas 2016-17

Changes in the Disabled Student Allowance mean the university has more responsibility than ever to ensure that online provision is accessible and offers a good experience for users, both students and staff.

In order to facilitate this we are changing the way that new course areas for 2016-17 are created, populated and archived. The changes, in brief, are as follows:
  • Standardisation of module areas
    • All module titles will have standardized titles: module code, module title and academic year so that students can easily locate them.
    • All new courses areas set up by TaLIC for 2016-17 will be provided as a blank template that complies with accessibility guidance.
    • Advice on how to sustain best practice will be provided  (see also workshop schedule below).
    • Every department will be provided with an ‘office’ area, if they dont have one already.  Departments who wish can have multiple areas for undergraduates and postgraduates.
  • Changes to learn.gold ‘archive’
We frequently receive requests for access to old materials on learn.gold.  The ‘archive’ on learn.gold is currently held on a different server, is quite cumbersome to use and inaccessible by most staff.  Therefore we are enabling easier access to past course areas by retaining the ‘archive’ on the same server.

Many Departments have already started on the Assessment Workflow, a new way of supporting Departments with their online assessment.  Part of this will involve discussions on end of year archiving and retention of assessed work. This change to the learn.gold ‘archive’ will make it easier for Departments to deal with data retention procedures.

3. Summer Workshops 2016

TaLIC has scheduled a series of workshops available from from 15 June 2016 to support you in planning and reviewing course area content for the coming academic year.

Baseline Standards. In line with changes in Disability Student Allowance coming into force in 2016-17, we are running sessions on how to apply best practice guidance on accessiblility and clarity in your course area.
